Academic Qualification
The following are the minimum academic requirements for taking the UGC NET exam.
- Applicants must have a minimum of 55% in their master’s degree or equivalent examination from a UGC-recognized university/college.
- Candidates from the OBC non-creamy layer/SC/ST/PWD category must have a minimum of 50%.
- Transgender candidates will be eligible for the same qualifying criteria as SC/ST/PWD candidates.
- Candidates pursuing a master’s degree or who have taken the final exam and are awaiting the results are also eligible to apply. Such candidates will be admitted provisionally and will be eligible for JRF. To be eligible for assistance professors must have a master’s degree with the required percentage depending on the category. They must complete their master’s degree within two years of receiving the UGC NET result.
- Candidates with a PhD degree whose has qualified for the master’s exam by September 19, 1992, will be eligible for a 5% aggregate mark relaxation.
- Candidates are encouraged to take the NET Exam for the subject in which they qualified for their graduation. If the subject is not available, select a subject that is similar to it.
- Candidates with a post-graduate diploma/certificate from an Indian University/Institute or a foreign degree/diploma/certificate from a foreign University/Institute should, in their own interest, check the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with a Master’s degree from a recognized Indian university with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Age Limit

Assistant Professor
- There is no age limit set for applying for Assistant professor.
- Candidates will be eligible for the post assistant professor if they successfully qualify NET/SLET/SET exam.
- Candidates with PhD degree in accordance with University Grants Commission will be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions.
- Who have cleared State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held prior to 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET.
Junior Research Fellowship
- The candidate’s age as of December 1, 2021, should not be more than 30.
- Candidates from the SC/ST, OBC-NCL, and PWD categories, as well as women, will have their age relaxation of up to 5 years.
- The candidates with research experience limited to the period spent on research in the relevant/related subject of a post-graduate degree, subject to a maximum of 5 years upon production of a certificate from the appropriate authority.
- Candidates with an L.L.M degree will be eligible for a three-year age reduction.
Registration for UGC NET examination
Candidates who aspire to become Assistant Professor or JRF can fill UGC NET Online form from the official NTA website i.e., ugcnet.nta.nic.in.
